Rotation calculator: days until home and your next three months

Pick a rotation, enter the first day of any hitch, and see the countdown, the next six changes, and a colored calendar. It runs in your browser and sends nothing anywhere.

How it counts

Count the whole days from the first day of a hitch to the date you care about and divide by the full cycle (28 for 14/14). If the remainder is less than your days on, that date is a hitch day; otherwise it is a home day. Days until home is the number of days from today to the next day that switches from hitch to home.

How to use the rotation calculator

  1. Pick your rotation. 2 and 1 means two weeks on and one week off, so 14 and 7 days. If yours is not listed, choose Custom and type your days on and off.

  2. Enter the first day of any hitch. Your last one, your next one, or one from last year all give the same calendar, as long as it really was day 1.

  3. Read the result. The big number is days until home, or days until your next hitch if the date falls on a home day. Under it are the date, which day of the stretch it is, the next six changes, and three months of calendar.

  4. Send it home. Copy a link to send home puts your rotation in the web address, so whoever opens it sees the same calendar on any phone or computer.

Worked example

A 14/14 whose hitch started on Tuesday, September 29, 2026. On Wednesday, October 7, 8 days have passed, so it is day 9 of 14 on hitch. Home starts on day 15, Tuesday, October 13, which is 6 days away. The next hitch starts 28 days after the last one, on Tuesday, October 27. Every crew change on a 14/14 lands on the same weekday, because 28 days is exactly four weeks.

Mistakes that make the count wrong

  • Entering a travel day as day 1 when your company counts it as a day off, or the reverse. The calendar shifts by one. Use the day your company counts as the first day of the hitch.
  • Reading 2/1 as days. In FIFO rosters 2/1 means weeks: 14 days on, 7 off.
  • Forgetting a holdover. If a hitch ran long, enter the first day of a hitch after the holdover, not before it.

What this calculator does not do

It does not save anything, and what you type is not sent anywhere; close the tab and it is gone, unless you copied the link. It does not handle a weekly schedule with a rotating day off; the rotating day off guide covers that by hand. It does not know holidays, overtime, or a crew change your company moves.

Keep it on your iPhone instead

HitchDays does this same count on your iPhone and keeps it on the first screen and in a free Home Screen widget, so you don't have to come back here. It also does the weekly type, words the countdown for the person at home, and works with no signal. See the countdown in the app.
